Motion Interaction

This is a reel of selected motion interaction from various projects at Microsoft, including Xbox, Courier, and Kin over the past 10 years. Screen sizes vary from 10 foot to mobile. Some of these experiences were aspirational and never shipped, but were fun explorations that exceeded the capabilities of the time. With a very few examples of motion elements from other artists receiving my direction, I created all the motion interaction using After Effects.

Xbox Companion Experience Concepts

This was the key deliverable of a design sprint I led in 2011. The goal for the 2 week project was to create a few interesting second screen experience scenarios that would inspire the rest of the design team to imagine new ways to engage with their Xbox, their Kinect, and their phone.

Kinect input for navigation was de-prioritized, but a few of these strategies ended up in the shipping product including:

  • A cross-marketing partnership with the NFL.
  • Controlling your TV with your phone and tablet.
  • Ordering pizza via Xbox.
  • Rapid authentication and pairing with Xbox (though not as seen).
  • In addition to creating most of the concepts, I also directed, shot, edited, and composited the motion design into the dead screens using After Effects and Mocha. The visual design and UI was left very simplistic for speed and to aid storytelling.
