A storyteller at heart.
It’s a bit trendy today to say that UX is about telling stories. However most everything in human interaction is truly storytelling. Understanding our users and their desires, so we may help them re-tell the story. We use story to explain the inexplicable through metaphor, juxtaposition, humor, and delight. This understanding is at the heart of successful user adoption and successfully eliminating risk.
After working in the film industry for a number of years, moving to Seattle took me on a different path that led me to interaction design nearly 15 years ago. What I found very surprising and interesting, is many of the same processes we used in the making of “Titanic,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” and other large films, are very similar to how software is designed and made; large teams, collaborating together, solving hard creative problems, all with the common goal of delighting the audience and hoping they will continue the story with their friends.
I’ve been told I excel at building strong teams and creating joyful design cultures. To create delight, we must be delightful. This is core to my principles as a design executive and senior creative leader.
Away from the studio.
I enjoy outdoor traveling, adventuring, photography, filmmaking, writing, and spending time with my college-aged kids and friends.
Born in Dallas, I’ve lived in Austin, Birmingham, Washington, D.C, and Los Angeles. I settled in Seattle some time ago and enjoy working remotely from sunny winter locales when able.
